Research in my laboratory seeks to understand how developmental mechanisms evolve. We focus on insects and have established new experimental systems that allow us to functionally reconstruct the molecular and morphological diversification of embryonic development in flies (Diptera). Our current projects employ developmental genetic and genomic approaches to examine mechanisms of axis specification, gene regulation, tissue differentiation and morphogenesis in selected species to understand developmental differences between Drosophila and mosquitoes. Our long-term goal is to contribute to a unified picture of insect development and to reveal genetic mechanisms of evolutionary change.
